granite kiss
late afternoon these shadows hold
fragments of conversations
history created or recreated each moment
this is an elegy to those lines lost among trees
juniper, apple
neglected walls covered with leaves
seemed I could walk forever cross the peaks of possibility
and I find myself crushed beneath this granite kiss
hairline cracks leave me exposed
light seeps through careless masonry
how did this happen after all those years
the constant struggle to build the wall
to mend the wall, to mend the wall
frost wrote something there is that doesn’t love a wall
that wants it down
and I find myself crushed beneath this granite kiss
it would take 15,000 men
243 years to build
260,000 miles of walls
I will balance here the thrill of the thing
outweighing the risk
hawk eyes see through me open doors
I fear to close
and I find myself crushed beneath this granite kiss
my failure to escape from this inevitable bliss
just two stones on the occasion of their first meeting
